JOSEPH W. MRKONICH SCHOLARSHIP

THE SCHOLARSHIP

Form must be submitted to the East Activities using this form by Thursday, April 24, 2025

The Joseph W. Mrkonich Scholarship was originated in 1991 by The Noper Foundation, a group of Class of ’72 East alumni.  It is named after Joe Mrkonich, who was a teacher and coach of boys and girls sports at East from 1963-1987, and a member of the Minnesota Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame.  Coach Mrkonich passed away in 2011. In 2012 he was inducted into the inaugural class of the Duluth East Hall of Fame.

Up to four JWM Scholarships are awarded annually to seniors who exemplify the work ethic, sportsmanship, and strong character that Coach Mrkonich role modeled over the years.  The scholarship includes monetary contribution towards post-secondary study.

CANDIDATE CRITERIA

  • Must have lettered at least once during Duluth East High School career in a school sponsored varsity athletic sport (e.g. basketball, swimming, etc.)

  • Must have a cumulative G.P.A. of 2.5 or greater

  • Must demonstrate other interests such as student council, band, choir, orchestra, debate team, theater, intramurals, other school clubs or associations, community volunteer activities or groups. 

  • Must exhibit good citizenship in the conduct of his or her daily activities. School violations or penalties should be acknowledged and addressed on the application. 

PROCESS

  • Complete this form and submit

  • Do not add supplemental materials – (ie resumes, letters of recommendation, etc…) Only the information requested on the application will be used. 

  • Form must be returned to the East Activities office by Thursday, April 24, 2025

  • Selection Committee reviews applications; recipients will be announced in May.

  • The Joseph W. Mrkonich Scholarship is paid one time to each recipient in an amount to be determined, for college or university study.  Such payment is made when the recipient provides proof of enrollment and commencement of classes.  The check is made payable to the college or university and the scholarship recipient.
