East Counseling Mission Statement

The counselors at Duluth East High School work as a team to provide the best possible academic and emotional support with care, empathy, and dedication to all students. The counseling program will work to provide the foundation for the acquisition of skills, attitudes, and knowledge preparing students for college and career success. Through our genuine effort and commitment, students will realize and embrace that they are unique and will strive to be the best they can be as members of the Duluth community and of society. The members of our team also provide support and assistance to other faculty members and parents as we are all working towards helping our students feel valued, important, and successful.

The Role of the School Counselor

• School counselors are actively committed to helping students explore their abilities, strengths, interests, and talents as these traits relate to career and college awareness and readiness.

• School counselors help parents focus on ways to further the education, personal and social growth of students.

• School counselors work with teachers and other educators to help students explore their potential and set realistic goals for themselves.

• School counselors seek to identify and utilize community resources that can enhance and compliment comprehensive school counseling programs and help students become productive members of society.

• Comprehensive school counseling programs are considered an integral part of the educational process that enables all students to achieve success in school.

Community and School Data

East High School is located in Duluth, Minnesota next to the shores of Lake Superior. With a population of 86,000, the city of Duluth provides diversified business, professional, and industrial services to northeastern Minnesota. East High School serves approximately the eastern half of Duluth. The area is almost entirely residential.

The curriculum of our four-year high school is designed to meet the needs of approximately 1,600 students. Our curriculum is semester based and we have a seven period day. The seven periods are 47 minutes in length and meet five times per week. Grades are distributed four times per year. Final Grades are given after two grade periods (at the end of first and second semester).

About 85% of East's graduates go on to some form of further education or training. Better than 60% go on to a four-year college and approximately 22% enroll in a community or two-year college option. Eight percent go into a full-time military or trade profession. The remainder choose immediate employment or are undecided.

East High Scholars 

Students who rank in the upper five percent of the graduating class are designated as East Scholars and recognized at Commencement.

National Merit Qualifying Test 

Each year East students have been recognized for achievement on the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The Class of 2022 has one National Merit Semi-Finalist.
